The American Academy/Association of Orthopedic Medicine (AAOM) is pleased to announce that Sean Mulvaney, MD, FAAOM, member of AAOM’s Board of Directors, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The AAOM Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes and promotes individuals who have made significant contributions to the organization and to the field of Interventional Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine (IROM) through instruction, leadership, service, or research.

“On behalf of the leadership of AAOM and the IROM community at-large, I extend congratulations to Dr. Mulvaney on this well-deserved recognition,” says Mike Carlson, DO, and AAOM President. “AAOM is honored to celebrate Sean’s exceptional leadership, innovation, and lifelong dedication to advancing the field of Interventional Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine.”

Dr. Sean Mulvaney is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and is board-certified in both Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine. He is the founder of the SGB Treatment Center and currently serves as Chief Science Officer and staff physician with Regenerative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Annapolis, Maryland—home of the SGB Treatment Center—where he focuses on the repair of musculoskeletal, nerve, and spine injuries using regenerative medicine techniques with ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance.

During his 31-year military career, Dr. Mulvaney served our nation’s Special Operations community as both a U.S. Navy SEAL officer for nine years and later as a U.S. Army physician.

In 2008, Dr. Mulvaney became the first Department of Defense physician credentialed in regenerative medicine techniques, including platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapy for the repair of musculoskeletal and spine injuries. He is an internationally recognized leader in the use of Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) for PTSD, having been the first to apply SGB to treat combat-related PTSD, and has published extensively on this groundbreaking work since 2009.

Dr. Mulvaney is widely known as an educator of physicians worldwide, pioneering and publishing extensively on ultrasound-guided techniques in regenerative medicine.

Dr. Mulvaney joins a distinguished group of past AAOM Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, each of whom has left a lasting impact on the profession and the patients we serve.
