It
has been my pleasure to act on the Board and help for a few trying years
as Secretary ? Treasurer. I was a charter member of this organization
and have enjoyed my membership. I have been active teaching the CYRIAX
approach to those attending and I have learned a vast amount of both
information and skills from the courses and friendships I have made in
AAOM. I was a family physician who graduated in 1951 from the University
of Toronto and managed in 1972 to herniate at least one lumbar disc and
felt I would never work again! Fortunately, I had a copy of a Dr. James
Cyriax textbook of Orthopaedic Medicine and had his recommended
approach (Epidural injection). That day in the hospital I was able to
get up and the next day I went home. I was amazed and pleased, as my
approach to the Musculo ? Skeletal system was limited to bed-rest, time
and traction. I found Dr. Cyriax was giving courses in England and
attended there twice learning an approach, which was unheard of at my
University. I attended him at Rochester, N.Y. where he had been invited
as a visiting Professor. These exposures encouraged me to accept his
offer to assist in Rochester and eventually to be a designated teacher
of Orthopaedic Medicine. I was clinical assistant Professor in the
Department of Orthopaedics at Strong Memorial Hospital 1982 ? 1986. I am
in full time practice of Orthopaedic medicine with the time being split
between Canada and the USA. I still do some teaching in Orthopaedic
Medicine concepts and welcome physicians who have been trained in our
courses to sit in with me for a couple of days. |
